teacher assessment/acountability

Here in TN, so that we will at least appear to be making progress (and gain Federal $$ for education), our Legislature just passed a measure making end of course tests, etc. part of teacher evaluation. For the traditional "academics" that's pretty cut and dry. For those of us outside the box, we're still going to be evaluated on student performance, but no one has figured out how. We are trying to come up with and submit ideas for this (other than, "wow that band director sure wins a lot of marchin' trophies, he must be rite fine!"). If there's anything that your state is doing that works (or doesn't!), please let me know REAL soon. Thanks!

  1. HI Jeff - Assessment in performance music must include quarterly written tests covering the various elements of the music covered during that period, student assessment on values - written by the students themselves, PLUS the all important performance assessments given for public and administrative review.
Core subjects do well in the written testing but I've yet to see a performance test on ,say, math performed in a setting for public review.
I say that the arts have a leg UP in the overall process.

  2. As a new "side" note, I was appointed yesterday by Tenn. Dept. Commissioner of Education, Dr. David Sevier, to advise the Teacher Evaluation and Accountability Committee which will be determining these measurements for our State.

  3. Jeff, keep us posted on what TN is doing because I think it will be moving into other states soon.
