National Concert Band Festival?

Is there any interest in something like a "National Concert Band Festival" within the support of ASBDA? A destination where bands could/would come and perform graded concert band selections, adjudicated and/or clinic atmosphere? What time of year might work? There has been discussion and there is some possibility of backing ($$$) for this from industry, but I'm just trying to see what might be the interest.

  1. I am very interested. I think location and time of year are the biggest considerations.

  2. Nice idea for showcasing and assessment. Timing is always a factor and coming from Hawaii, so is cost. I have many athletes in my program and their greatest fear is being replaced by another teammate if they are gone on a trip.

  3. Speaking of trip, I am planning one for my middle school group (7th & 8th grades) and seek an educational experience apart from a normal family trip. I would like to have an exchange with another school group. The Washington D.C. area pops out, visiting the Marine Band and all the other attractions. Any school band program interested in this idea?

  4. As I'm sure you are aware, ASBDA resureted the National Band Contest in the mid 1980's with the efforts of Dale Harrks, Robert Dean, Seymour Okun, and several other ASBDA members. In spite of extensive advertising, securing top-notch judges, and providing a suitable venue, the contest was marginally successful in the first year, less so in the second year, and abandoned in the third year. Like many/most ASBDA ideas/projects, this has been tried. I seriously doubt that there is enough interest in a national contest to pursue the idea again.

  5. A good idea, Jeff. Would we need some criteria for selection to perform?

  6. The idea is certainly an attention getter - in light of the amount of destination travel that
exists in most band programs today. Anyone considering following up on this should consult
the ASBDA Archives (FILE 2, DRAWER 1) Contact Russ
Vroman, Archives Chrm. 116 Illini Dr., East Peoria, Ill. 61611 for access to the information.
Information relative to the festival for 1985 and 1986 are located here. It would be a place to begin. Seymor Okun and I chaired two of them.

  8. I attended both national contests held in Cedar Falls IA in the 80's and I thought they were very well organized and run well. I thought they were very expensive for the schools attending at that time and I cannot imagine the cost of running and attending one at todays costs.
